Obesity
Greece is a country rich in high quality food products and food culture with a tradition in the Mediterranean Diet, which has been an important factor of the development and promotion of health through the centuries.
However, today obesity has become a serious problem for a large proportion of the Greek population. The switch to dietary habits that diverge from the traditional model in terms of ingredients, mode of preparation (cooking), and consumption combined with a sharp decline in physical activity puts Greece among the European countries with the highest overweight and childhood obesity rates. In fact, Greece ranks first among the 27 EU countries, with 44.4% overweight boys and 37.7% overweight girls.
The obesity problem is further exacerbated in times of economic crisis, since the quality of the available food choices is degraded while access to food lacks regularity. Periods of hunger followed by periods when food can be available, although not necessarily of high nutritional value, lead people who are already exposed to food insecurity to the consumption of excessive amounts of food of questionable quality.
